ProjeCts & Collaborations
L'Oumigmag is a jazz and avant-garde quintet based in Quebec. The group is renowned for its innovative and resolutely creative approach, offering a new sound that combines the roots of Quebec fiddle music with exhilarating grooves.
The group's diverse influences, including Portico Quartet, The Gloaming and Nik Bärtsch, result in music that is immersive, contemplative and energising.
The ensemble, under the direction of drummer Ivan Bamford, draws on the many influences and inspirations of its members, with the late saxophonist Thomas Chapin as a particularly significant influence. This recording features three previously unrecorded compositions by Chapin, which were generously entrusted to Bamford and his colleagues by Chapin's wife, Terri Castillo-Chapin.
Les Anses Résonantes is an innovative collaborative project that integrates the spheres of acoustic, electronic and formal research. It brings together musicians Stéphane Diamantakiou, Sébastien Sauvageau, Gabrielle Harnois-Blouin and videographer Charline Dally.
The starting point of this work is the development of an acoustic double bass augmented by 6 sympathetic strings in the style of the Scandinavian Hardanger violin. In addition to the use of acoustic resonance, this system allows the two sets of strings to be amplified independently in order to better inhabit the sound space. Sampling, granular synthesis and oscillators are quickly becoming the preferred partners for acoustic sound deployments and the occasional addition of vocals. The ensemble favors long and enveloping musical forms organized in mapped improvisations, where the tangle of synthesizers and textures mingle with the hypnotic patterns of the double bass.
Combining the analog video signal with computer-generated images, Charline Dally's video performance explores the duality between synthetic and acoustic sounds.
Dream Keepers is a multicultural, multilingual group that draws inspiration from the diverse musical traditions of its members. The project seamlessly combines musical languages, world rhythms and different improvisational traditions. It fuses the acoustic sounds of Stéphane's double bass and Hamin's hand drums with Bernard's electronic elements, while Ayelet's radiant voice provides a majestic counterpoint.
Founded in 1979 and directed by musicians Joane Hétu and Danielle Palardy Roger, Productions SuperMusique (PSM) is dedicated to musique actuelle, improvisation and sound experimentation. PSM focuses on the creation, production and programming of concerts, sound installations and multimedia performances in Montreal. It also organises international tours and presents workshops for young audiences.
In this project we embark on a musical exploration inspired by the visionary Dutch painter Piet Mondrian and his abstractions of trees. Our aim is to translate his unique creative process into a captivating world of sound. Mondrian's method was to visually distill the essence of naturally harmonious forms through a recursive approach. By progressively reducing the visual components of a tree with each iteration, he revealed the underlying beauty of its complex structure. Inspired by his approach, we seek to extract elements from musical gestures to reveal their hidden structures.
