Stéphane Diamantakiou was born in Marseille, France. He discovered music with the electric bass and quickly became interested in creation. This taste for sonic experimentation became a constant in his artistic approach, a search for balance between abstraction and groove. After an initial period of self-study, he enrolled at the Conservatoire where he studied the double bass through the classical and jazz repertoire. After graduating, he made a series of friendships that shaped the following years. He toured France and Europe, sharing the stage with artists such as Gong, the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Cecile McLorin Salvant. It was during this period that Stéphane met Barre Phillips, who gave him much to think in the field of improvised music. With a desire for new challenges, he moved to Montreal in the summer of 2011. There he joined several very active projects, including the jazz quintet L'Oumigmag, the Eyevin Trio and Nonet, and collaborated with Ayelet Rose Gottlieb (John Zorn a cappella quartet), Jay Clayton, Jessica Moss, Ensemble SuperMusique and Les Arrivants among others. Musical exploration finds new possibilities when he meets Hansford Rowe (Gong, Allan Holdsworth, La Monte Young) who shares Just Intonation concepts. In 2021, Stéphane is invited to the CEM, the Centre Expérimentation Musicale de Chicoutimi, for a one-month writing residency. The result will be the repertoire for his first personal creative project, Le Double. The 9 musicians show premieres at the Festival de Jazz du Saguenay and Montreal's Sala Rossa in the spring of 2023. The eponymous debut album, produced by Zach Scholes (Kee Avil), is released at the Festival International des Musiques Actuelles de Victoriaville in may 2024.
